RU maintains different licensing schemes for campus-wide and discipline
specific software packages. In an effort to achieve cost effective pricing,
several methods are used for the purchase of software licenses including site
licenses, concurrent licensing and individual licenses.

- Site Licenses
- RU maintains site licenses for several applications that allow the
software to be installed on any university owned computer; and faculty, staff,
and student personal/home computers.
- Metered or Concurrent Licenses
- Metered software provides a limited number of application licenses for a
large distribution at a minimum cost. RU uses Sassafras KeyServer software to
control metered software licenses. University owned computers must have the
Sassafras client software installed prior to using any metered applications.
- Individual Licenses
- Software that is not metered but may be individually installed for a set
number of users or individual applications purchased for a particular university computer.
- Network Licenses
- Software that meters itself when the computer is connected to the network.
Therefore, the application controls the number of users that can execute an application
license at a given time.
