The beginning of a new semester inevitably brings with it an onslaught of viruses
and worms - some mere nuisances, some serious threats, but ALL create unnecessary
interruptions to network services. To protect student computers, and ultimately
the network we all share, IT installed a new system called “ Clean Access.”
"Clean Access" will significantly reduce the risk of network attacks and computer
infection, and make your computer more secure and more reliable. The login is similar
to the wireless authentication of last semester; except that "Clean Access" client
software will need to be installed. You will be given the option to install this
software when you try to view a web page on campus. Windows, Linux, and Mac OS devices
are supported by "Clean Access" (as well as many others).

More Technical Details
"Clean Access" secures the network by making sure that all computers on the network
pass certain requirements. It is software that is offered for download automatically,
when required, when you use a web browser. After installation in Windows, its icon will
appear on the QuickLaunch bar at the bottom of the screen.
The requirements for student machines are (for Windows computers):
1) Patches and fixes published by Microsoft for unknown vulnerabilities in the Windows operating
systems have been applied.
2) Virus protection software is installed and the virus signatures it checks for are reasonably
up to date.
"Clean Access will also recommend that Microsoft's anti-spyware software be installed, but
compliance with this check is NOT currently required. Remember that McAfee
is available free via
Radford University's site license if needed. The Technology Assistance Center will assist in
resolving problems accessing campus networks and will support "Clean Access".
Problem Solutions
If you have already installed the "Clean Access" software, and if a logon window does not appear
automatically when you try to use the Internet; click on its icon in the QuickLaunch bar at the
bottom of the screen.
If multiple "Clean Access" popup's appear, you may have both wired and
wireless Internet connections active- try disabling your wireless connection. (Press Function
F7 on your Gateway Tablet PC)
If you want to begin using the Internet with some service besides a web browser (say for Internet
Messenger etc.) you should click on "Clean Access" icon in the QuickLaunch bar at the bottom of
the screen first, or open a web browser to download the "Clean Access" software.
