Why VoIP?
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony system is an effort
to improve the technology services available at Radford University. The
VoIP system transmits data, voice and video over a single network infrastructure,
allowing the University Community to benefit from state-of-the-art telephone
sets, quicker network connections, streamlined services, and other enhanced
features. The implementation of VoIP's innovative technology will result
in an advanced communications infrastructure for RU, as well as position
RU for future services and enhancements such as toll-bypass and unified
messaging. |

Has the tone I hear when I pick up the phone changed?
Yes the tone you hear when you pick up the handset will sound different.
It sounds like the dial tone you have at home. Will
this cost me more money?
Costs will stay the same for a phone line. Is calling
Roanoke any different?
Yes, you will need to dial 7755 to access Roanoke instead of #8. WAIT
FOR SECOND DIAL TONE!!! Is calling Long distance any
different?
Yes, you will need to dial 9 and keep dialing. You will then hear the
digit sounds back then the authorization code prompt. We are working with
Verizon to eliminate this. Do we still need to use the
pause key with the fax machine?

Caller ID work correctly?
Outbound Caller ID is correct when calling off campus. Long Distance calls
will not show the correct caller ID. Do we have to or
may we change phones?
You will continue to use the phones you have. If you have an Aastra 390
phone, we will be working to change the buttons on those phones. There
are now new options if your department would like to have a more feature-rich
phone. The phones we recommend are available at: http://www.radford.edu/~networks/voip/phones.htm
Does the new VoIP system have Call Waiting?
Yes, call waiting will continue to be on your phones. This system only
provides for two calls to be in call waiting like at one time, like the
service you use at home. Do we still use our Authorization
Codes? Do our Authorization Codes change?
You will continue to use authorization codes in the same way. These codes
will stay the same. For long distance, you will hear your digits being
sent to Verizon before you hear the two-beep prompt for your authorization
code. How do I make Conference Calls?
Talk to the first caller. Press Flash. Dial the second user. Wait for
the second person to answer. Once the second user has answered, press
flash. Will I be able to forward my calls to a cell
phone after three rings?
Yes, your number can still be transferred to a cell phone. We however
are not able to change the number of rings before it forwards. Caller
ID from the original caller is currently not correct. This problem is
currently being researched. |
